The HIPPY program helps parents in their role as their child’s
first teacher and encourages parents to become involved in
school and community life. The aim is to increase their children’s
chances of success in school.
HIPPY was developed at the NCJW Research Institute of Innovation
in Education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel in 1969. The
first HIPPY programs were established in the United Sates in 1984.
Parents of three, four, and five year old children who have had
limited formal education, are trained during visits by HIPPY staff,
many of whom are former HIPPY parents themselves. The HIPPY curriculum
focuses on language development, problem solving and discrimination
skills. It
contains 30 weeks of activities and nine story books for each year.
NCJW Portland Section supports
the two HIPPY sites in Oregon: in the Portland Public Schools and Western
Washington County. Portland
Public Schools is a trilingual program, speaking English, Spanish
and Vietnamese , while Washington County is a bilingual program,
speaking English and Spanish and serving many immigrant families.
For more information regarding HIPPY and how you can become
involved, call the Section Office, 503-222-5006.
